Homemade Beer Battered Fish & Chips Recipe

Enjoy this classic British dish at home with fresh white fish, hand-cut fries and a side of tartare sauce.

  • Step 1.

Peel the potatoes and cut into thin fries. Soak them in cold water for about 20 minutes to remove the excess starch.
  • Step 2.

Meanwhile, prepare the batter. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, baking powder, and beer until it forms a smooth, thick batter.
  • Step 3.

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large deep saucepan to 180C.
  • Step 4.

Pat the fish dry and season both sides with salt and pepper. Dip each piece into the batter to fully coat.
  • Step 5.

Fry the chips in batches for about 5 minutes until golden and crisp, then drain on kitchen paper.
  • Step 6.

Fry the battered fish for 5-7 minutes until golden and crisp. Use a slotted spoon to lift out the fish, draining it well, and set it on kitchen paper to drain off any excess oil.
  • Step 7.

Serve the fish and chips with salt, vinegar, and tartare sauce.
