Sourdough Bread Recipe

This classic sourdough bread recipe uses a homemade sourdough starter to create a flavorful and tangy loaf. It's a labor of love that's worth every minute.

  • Step 1.

In a large bowl, mix together the sourdough starter, water, and 3 cups of the flour. Cover and let sit at room temperature for 4 hours.
  • Step 2.

Add the salt and the remaining flour to the dough and knead until smooth. Cover and let rise at room temperature for 2 hours.
  • Step 3.

After the dough has risen, shape it into a round loaf. Place the loaf in a well-floured proofing basket, cover, and let rise for another 4 hours.
  • Step 4.

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a baking stone, place it in the oven to preheat as well.
  • Step 5.

Carefully transfer the loaf onto a piece of parchment paper. Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  • Step 6.

Transfer the loaf (with the parchment paper) onto the baking stone. If you don't have a baking stone, you can place the loaf on a baking sheet.
  • Step 7.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Step 8.

Let the bread cool completely before slicing and serving. Serve with a thick spread of butter.
